An Overview of EDMT's Productions

El Dorado Musical Theatre produces a number of different types of productions each year. Each is designed for the experience and comfort level of our performers. All are presented with the goal of delighting our audiences.

EDMT runs very differently than most theater companies; everyone who registers is included in the cast of a show (space allowing). There is a single exception with our once-yearly “Encore” production. So, while registration is what assures that you will be part of a cast, auditions are necessary to place each performer in a role which best matches their skill and experience level as well as overall suitability for a particular part.

Here is a description of the types of shows we do each year from our the entry level to our top performer’s showcase.

Training Shows are an ideal way for young people between the ages of 5 – 9 to start learning about performance and musical theater. For those who already have some theater experience, it is a unique opportunity to gain further experience acting, singing, and dancing on stage.

All those enrolled will participate in an audition that parallels the audition process used for our Main Stage productions. Since all performers who enroll are in the production, auditions are for experience and for determining who will play each specific role.

All cast members will learn key theater terms, as well as singing, acting, choreography, and how a production is brought to the stage.

The show itself is a “lighter” production that is ideally suited to younger performers.

Rehearsals are on Saturday mornings. So, the time commitment is less than a typical full production.

This is a very popular program which usually fills to capacity within a day of registration opening.

Rising Stars shows allow our performers from 6-13 to be featured in their own full length production. They are usually our first show of the summer. Some of our past Rising Stars productions include: Cinderella, Disney’s Mulan Jr., Disney’s Jungle Book, Willy Wonka Jr., and Spyquest: An Agent 006-1/2 Adventure.

Main Stage shows are our large-cast productions and feature performers up to 20 years of age. The fall Main Stage production usually has two complete casts with ages between 6-20. The second Main Stage production of the season runs in the spring with age ranges between 10-20. Examples of past Main Stage shows include: Peter Pan, The Wizard of OZ, Cats, 42nd Street, Les Miserables, Disney’s Aladdin Jr., and A Christmas Carol.

Encore shows feature our very best performers in a production that showcases their talent. This is the one “audition only” show of the entire season. Only a select few of the performers who audition are included in the cast. Our Encore show usually opens in February. Some of our past Encore shows include: Legally Blonde, Singin’ in the Rain, and The Addams Family.  Encore age range is 13-22.

High Voltage is the premier performing group of El Dorado Musical Theatre. The High Voltage company consists of 20 young performers who perform high-energy, fast-paced revues which showcase the talent of the entire cast. High Voltage performs  throughout the region, including four major shows at the Harris Center at Folsom Lake College. They have performed at venues such as the State Capital Rotunda, Shriners Hospitals for Children, Disneyland, and on the cruise ship, Carnival Splendor.
